I love telling people that a dog brought me a client. Those who’ve heard this story before know that the dog didn’t hold the client’s hand and bring her to me.

But this dog sparked off an encounter that led to the person signing up for coaching. That client referred a second one who is now my business partner.

Here’s how this story started…

My sons met this friendly dog as they were playing outside. They later met the dog’s owner and introduced her to me. This introduction in turn led to a client referral who signed up for coaching at our first meeting.

I still remember being totally surprised when she signed up. I’d recently raised my fees and was struggling with voicing out the new fees confidently. I also didn’t believe people would pay what I thought was a lot of money.

Years later in 2017, this client introduced me to Mary G Waithaka who needed business coaching. As I coached her, I realized I needed her to help me transform my business startup coaching program into an e-course.

In a 2-hour strategy session, MaryG helped me come up with a very simple and highly actionable plan for 3 online income streams:

  1. A business startup book.
  2. An e-course based on the book.
  3. A membership program.

I sold the book and e-course then got stuck. Only this time it was more of a mindset problem not a strategy one.

Over time, MaryG and I have helped each other grow. She knows my business in and out. And she never hesitates to call me out or share an idea at any time. We now know each other very well and yet we’ve never met physically.

Fast forward to a business partnership

MaryG started attracting experienced professionals who wanted to monetize their expertise. She sent most of them to me because they needed mindset coaching, which I excel in.

The referrals overwhelmed me. At the same time, I was easing out of business startup coaching, but didn’t want to throw away all my content and resources.

As we brainstormed these challenges, the gap became increasingly obvious. A group program was the answer.

But, we had two problems:

  1. How were we going to identify the right people for the program?
  2. How would the marketing and onboarding work remotely?

We only wanted to work with a few people and make sure they got results. Additionally, working together to set up a program remotely was a new experience.

Many Zoom brainstorming meetings later, we got a solution. That is how Expertise to Income Jumpstart came to be.

Despite all these AHAs, we were still skeptical.

We’ve both been burnt badly in business partnerships gone sour. We also valued our friendship and were afraid of messing it up with a business partnership.

Navigating this potential landmine took a bit of work. Luckily, we overcame the challenges and hosted two high-impact Expertise to Income Jumpstart workshops in May and June 2020.

We also started the Expert Accelerator 12-month coaching program with some graduates of the workshop.

It’s not been smooth sailing because we’re doing this while running our other businesses. We’re also setting up in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We’re really enjoying the process despite all the challenges encountered. Our skills complement each other and and our clients are getting massive value from this!

So that’s how a dog brought me a client, and a business partnership.
